During the next 12 years, he compiled an enviable 162-124 record, making him the second most winningest coach in RIT cage history. In 1975-76, Carey guided the Tigers to a 20-7 record, including their first berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs. Carey was also at the helm for four Chase Lincoln First Tournament crowns, his last coming in 1979-80. In 1977, Carey became director of Athletics and was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the development of RIT during the 1980’s. Carey remained athletic director until 1980 when he assumed a similar role at Nazareth.
