John Serth made a name for himself, excelling in basketball and baseball. He had a stellar career, scoring more than 900 points in basketball, and hitting over .300 in baseball. As a basketball player, Serth collected 918 career points, averaging 14.5 per game. He was also prolific on the boards, averaging 9.6 rebounds in 63 career contests. His single-season high in scoring came in 1965-66 when he tallied 426 points. At the time, he was only the fourth player in RIT history to score more than 400 points in a season. His game high came in the 1964 RIT Tournament when he recorded 26 points against Indiana Tech. Serth was also impressive at the free throw line, hitting on 84.3 percent of his career attempts. In 1966-67 he served as co-captain and was named to the ECAC Weekly Honor Roll. In his three seasons, the basketball squad posted a 36-36 mark. Not one to be idle, Serth carded a .308 career batting average with the baseball team. In 37 games, he collected 45 hits, including 11 doubles.
