Fred Smith was the Institute’s first Vice President for Student Affairs, a position he held for 21 years until becoming Secretary of the Institute and Assistant to the President. In his role as vice president for Student Affairs, Smith virtually touched all aspects of campus life. Along with his many contributions to RIT, he took special interest in the development of intercollegiate athletics, leading it to one of national prominence. Among others, his leadership in fund raising has resulted in development of an endowment for athletics, construction of the Hale-Andrews Student Life Center, new locker rooms and a press/guest box for Ritter Ice Arena, completion of the Ellingson Trophy Case in the Clark Gymnasium lobby, RIT’s first Tiger statue, and Tiger Stadium.
