COVERING RIT ATHLETIC CONTESTS
Working media members wishing to cover any athletic events at RIT must contact the Athletic Communications Office a minimum of three days prior to the day of competition. Requests to video/photograph any RIT athletic events must also be submitted to the Athletic Communications Office for prior approval. Any requests to cover/photograph any teams on the road must be submitted to the host sports information office for prior approval.

PHOTOGRAPHY
NCAA rules prohibit the use of a student-athlete's name, picture, or likeness to be used in the promotion of any business (such as advertisements) or to appear on any commercial items such as t-shirts. The use of a RIT student-athlete's name, picture, or likeness in any commercial entity jeopardizes the eligibility of RIT student-athletes. Please help us comply with NCAA rules and refrain from using the name, picture, or likeness of a RIT student-athlete in any advertising or on any commercial items.

A credentialed photographer may:

  • Provide photos of the student-athletes to the athletic department, provided the photographs do not contain a watermark or logo of the commercial entity or photographer;
  • Post photographs of student-athletes with remaining eligibility to a web site for "newsworthy" or "informational" purposes as long as there is no link to a commercial web site or social media page that advertises the services of the photographer;
  • Post photographs of student-athletes whose eligibility has expired.

A credentialed photographer may not:

  • Sell photographs of student-athletes with remaining athletic eligibility for private use including parents or other relatives or acquaintances of the student-athlete;
  • Post photographs of student-athletes with remaining eligibility on social media accounts;
  • Post a portfolio to a commercial web site that contains information about a photographer's business, or either advertises or promotes the services of the photographer;
  • Place a student-athlete's name or photo on commercial items (t-shirts, posters, etc.) that are produced by a commercial agency.

Due to limited space and to ensure compliance with NCAA guidelines, no credentials will be issued to either freelance writers or photographers without a specific assignment received in writing by the assigning organization.

Per NCAA guidelines, photographers are limited to shooting in the designated areas along the competition surface. Please refrain from shooting near benches and consider viewpoints for the fans in the stands. Photographers are asked to stand at least 10 feet away from the playing surface at any venue.

INTERVIEW REQUESTS
All non-game day interviews with any RIT student-athletes, coaches or administrators must be requested a minimum of three days prior to the proposed interview time through the Athletic Communications Office. (In the case of breaking news when a three-day lead time is not feasible, requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.) The Director or the Associate Director will then coordinate accordingly with the individual requested. Please note, while all efforts will be made to accommodate reasonable requests, we reserve the right for individuals to refuse per their own discretion.

When making a request to interview a student-athlete, please be aware that academic endeavors (class, exams, etc.) are given priority when scheduling an appropriate date and time for the interview.

RADIO/STREAMING/BROADCASTS
Anyone wishing to stream/broadcast a contest at RIT must contact the Athletic Communications Office at least one week in advance of the event. Radio line preference will be given to home broadcasters. All telephones lines take incoming and make outgoing calls, but all broadcasts must be established via an incoming call.

RELEASE DISTRIBUTION
Releases, game notes, advisories, etc. are emailed to media that cover RIT on a regular basis. Media members wishing to be added to the distribution list for a particular sport should contact the Athletic Communications office with an appropriate email address.

REQUESTS FOR HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Any reasonable requests for historical/archival information that is not readily available on the department website (www.ritathletics.com) will be accommodated on a case-by-case basis according to priority.  Please note that specific athletic department records/statistics/information may not be available from past seasons due to limited archival information, especially during the earlier years of the department and individual programs.

HISTORY OF THE "TIGERS" NICKNAME
Originally RIT's intercollegiate athletic teams were called the "Techmen" and the school colors were blue and gray.

Former sports information director Harry Watts saw the need for team identification and suggested the "Tiger" in 1955 and, following an undefeated 1955-56 men's basketball season, "Tigers" became the official mascot.

Some two years later, burnt umber, orange and white were adopted as the official intercollegiate athletic colors.
