No member of the RIT women’s swimming team has earned more All-American honors than Mary Beth (Breckenridge) Bakerink. A native of Elma, N.Y., Bakerink also successfully combined academics and athletics, maintaining a 3.6 grade point average. A record-holder in three events, Bakerink carried home 11 All-American certificates in four years, six as part of relays, and five in individual events. She was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay that set the trend in 1981-82, taking fourth place at the NCAAs with a time of 1:43.0. Bakerink’s best individual placing of fourth at the NCAA Championships came in the 50-yard freestyle in 1982, as she covered the distance in :25.26. Bakerink scored a school record 1,099 points and was the 1984-85 Senior Athlete of the Year.
