Records were made to be broken, and Paul Bartels certainly did more than his share of rewriting RIT swim history. An All-American every year, Bartels culminated his career as the scoring leader and Senior Athlete of the Year. A native of Irondequoit, N.Y., Paul broke 11 school records, won two state titles and carried off nine All-American certificates (awarded to those placing in the top 12 at the nationals). During his swim career, RIT compiled an enviable 41-10 record and placed in the NCAA Division III championships each season. A versatile performer, Bartels excelled in every stroke, but concentrated on the backstroke, butterfly and individual medley. He held the school 100-yard butterfly mark of :52.21.
