The late Mr. F. Ritter Shumway and his late wife Hettie were prominent advocates in shaping the future of Rochester Institute of Technology. An honorary chair to the RIT Board of Trustees, Shumway was a major contributor to the Institute. A recipient of RIT's Nathaniel Rochester Award for his ongoing support, Mr. Shumway passed away on March 9, 1992 at the age of 85. Shumway was president of Ritter Company, which his grandfather Frank founded in 1953. The company was known worldwide for the manufacture of dental, medical, and hospital equipment. The company subsequently evolved into the Ritter-Pfaudler Corp., and then Sybron Corp. in 1968. Shumway served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer. A major donor to the Ritter-Clark Memorial Ice Rink and Gymnasium at RIT's former downtown campus, Shumway combined his love for skating with his commitment to the school's fund for the new campus. As a result, the Frank Ritter Memorial Ice Arena became part of intercollegiate athletics at the Henrietta, N.Y. campus. In time, the arena became a performance center for aspiring and leading skaters from around the country.
