BUFFALO, NY - The RIT softball team (9-6) extended its winning streak to three games after earning a road sweep at Buffalo State (2-8) on Thursday afternoon at Bengal Field. RIT rallied to win game one, 2-1, then cruised to the win in the nightcap, 8-1. The Tigers allowed just five Buffalo State hits in the doubleheader.
In game one, RIT scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to rally from a 1-0 deficit. Megan O'Connell singled to lead off the inning, and moved to second after
Brittney LaVoie (Plattsburgh, NY/Ticonderoga) bunted her over.
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn) singled to left center, driving in O'Connell to tie the game at 1-1. After McCormick stole second base,
Emily Courtney (Berlin, CT/Kingswood-Oxford) singled to left field, scoring McCormick with the winning run.
Senior hurler
Carlissa Cole (Alden, NY/Alden) was able to set the Bengals down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, capping off a brilliant performance for her fifth win of the year. Cole allowed just three hits and a walk, while striking out four batters in the complete-game gem.
Arielle Link (Weston, CT/Weston) was 2-for-3 with a double for RIT.
Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) and
Tori Nadow (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) both walked twice.
In game two, RIT scored twice in the fifth inning and five times in the sixth to snap a 1-1 tie and cruise to the victory.
Sophomore
Brittany Kemp (Dansville, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) was the story for RIT, tying her career-high with 11 strikeouts, while allowing just two hits and an unearned run in the complete-game effort on the mound. At the playe, Kemp was 3-for-4, with a run scored, double, and four runs batted in. She drove in a run with a single in the fifth inning, then broke the game open with a bases-clearing, three run double in the sixth.
The TIgers drilled 12 base hits in game two. Courtney, McManus, and
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) were each 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Sarah Sampson (Rochester, NY/Northstar) and Nadow were both 1-for-3 with a run scored and driven in.
Seven of the nine Tiger starters had at least one hit. Overall, 10 different Tigers had at least one hit in the doubleheader.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, as they host conference foe Utica in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. It will be RIT's first games at RIT Field since it was renovated last fall.
