Softball splits with Union on Senior Day; wins 8-0 (5 inn.) after 6-1 opening loss

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT Softball team closed the 2026 season with a doubleheader split opposite Union, Saturday, bouncing back from a 6-1 opening loss with an 8-0 (5 inn.) game-two victory.
 
RIT 8, UNION 0 (5 INN.)
  • RIT first-year Taryn Jones finished 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI while sophomore Anna Cavotta finished 1-for-3 with a triple and scored two runs.
  • The Tigers scored three times in the bottom of the first, including a two-run home run over the centerfield fence by Jones and a bases-loaded walk by junior Maria Minemier.
  • Jones launched another two-run shot to centerfield in the top of the second for a 5-0 lead.
  • RIT made it a 6-0 lead in the fourth after Cavotta led off with a triple to the right centerfield wall and came home on a RBI groundout by sophomore Sylvia White.
  • The Tigers loaded the bases on three-consecutive singles by first-year Paige Stein, senior Jessica Majot and Minemier in the fifth. First-year Kassidy Donisi hit a ball that was misplayed by the Union pitcher, allowing Stein to score from third. Majot came home with the deciding eighth run on a wild pitch for the mercy-rule victory.

  • Jones launched a home run over the center field wall in the bottom of the first for the early 1-0 lead.
  • Majot didn't allow a hit until the Garnet Chargers broke through with three runs on two hits and an error in the fifth.
  • Union score two more in the sixth, including a leadoff home run by Elizabeth Werner.
  • Majot took the complete game loss, only allowing two earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out seven. 
RECORD BOOK UPDATE
  • Majot celebrated senior day with her 300th career strikeout, finishing seventh in program history. She also finished as only the sixth Tiger to throw over 400 career innings, while ending her career sixth in program history with 66 starts, tied for fifth with 81 appearances, tied for sixth with 26 wins and eighth with 42 complete games.
  • Jones registered the 15th two-home run game in program history and first since 2019. She also tied the single-season program record with her eighth home run of the campaign – the most since Emily McPherson knocked eight in 2009 – and moved into a tie for fifth on the career home run list.  
  • Jones finished her rookie season with a team-high 41 RBI – the second highest single season total in program history and the most since Michelle Halleran brought home a program-record 43 in 2001.
