ROCHESTER, NY -- RIT senior guard
Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville)'s 45-foot three pointer at the buzzer gave the RIT men's basketball team a thrilling 60-57 win over St. John Fisher College in Empire 8 action on Tuesday. The win keeps the Tigers alive for a berth in the Empire 8 Tournament and improves them to 10-10 overall and 7-4 in the Empire 8. St. John Fisher, who has lost three in a row, fall to 12-10 overall and 8-5 in the Empire 8.
With 10 seconds remaining in the second half and the score tied, Fisher's attempted inbounds went the length of the court and out of bounds giving the Tigers the ball back with four seconds to play.
Korinchak took the inbounds pass, dribbled to his right, over half court and threw up a three-pointer from 45 feet out that went in just as the buzzer sounded. It's the second time in his career that he has beaten the buzzer with a shot to win a game. He beat Ithaca with a buzzer beater back in the 2008-09 season.
Korinchak played a key role in a strong second half for the Tigers. He came off the bench to score five points, grab two big offensive rebounds and had steals in three consecutive possessions to key the Tigers come back.
Senior
Darryl Anderson (San Diego, CA/Southwest) also had a monster second half for RIT. He scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the second half, dished out two assists and had four steals for the Tigers who forced Fisher into 24 turnovers.
Sophomore center
RJ Kalb (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) added 12 points and had five rebounds, while
Justin Heisig (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) added 10 points and seven rebounds.
After trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, RIT outscored the Cardinals 16-9 over the final 13 minutes of the half to trail by only foour points at the break.
The second half went back and forth with nine ties and three lead changes.
Anderson matched RIT's largest lead of four points with a pair of free throws with 2:35 to play.
A layup off a missed three pointer by Jason Norsen pulled the Cardinals to within two points.
Jordan Gettings, who led Fisher with 18 points, tied the game with 1:05 to play with a made free throw.
Anthony Terry (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) stole the ball from Jordan Koch with 10 seconds remaining and was fouled on the play. He missed the front end of the one-and-one that gave Fisher a chance to take the lead.
The Cardinals inbounds pass never connected giving Korinchak the chance at the buzzer to win in it for the Cardinals.
RIT hits the road for a pair of Empire 8 road games this weekend. RIT will face Hartwick College on Friday at 8 p.m. and travel to Stevens to face the Ducks on Saturday at 2 p.m.
