ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's basketball team advanced to the finals of the 25th Harold J. Brodie Tournament with an 80-59 win over Waynesburg University in first round action on Friday. RIT will face Montclair State, who beat Mt. Aloysius 118-105, in the title game on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm.
The Tigers opened the game on a 10-0 run, leading by as many as 14 points in the first half. The Yellow Jackets closed out the half on a 12-3 run to trail 29-24 at the half.
RIT shot 31.0% from the floor in the first half on 9-of-29 shooting. The Tigers were 2-for-9 from behind the arc and were out-rebounded by Waynesburg 21-18.
Anthony Terry (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) led RIT with nine points.
Justin Heisig (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) added seven points and five rebounds and
Marcus Lowe (Anchorage, AK/Service) added five points and two assists.
The Yellow Jackets opened the second half with a 6-2 mini run to close the Tigers lead to one point at 33-32. Two made free throws by Waynesburg's Steven Iser got the Yellow Jackets the closest they'd been since early in the first half.
RIT responded with a quick 7-0 min run of their own to open the lead back to eight points on a layup by freshman
Dan Martin (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow).
Marcus Lowe (Anchorage, AK/Service)'s jumper with 12:56 to play extended RIT's lead out to 15 points at 48-33.
Senior
Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville)'s bucket with 11:33 remaining gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game at 19 points. He finished with seven points, four rebounds and three assists.
Waynesburg never got closer than 16 points down the stretch as RIT cruised home for the win.
RIT got 35 points from their bench on Friday, including 31 in the second half. The Tigers shot 43.8% from the floor including 54.3% in the second half. RIT held a 37-35 rebound edge and scored 27 points off of 27 Waynesburg turnovers.
Heisig led RIT with 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals. He shot 6-of-11 from the floor and was 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
Terry added 11 points, while Lowe and Korinchak each added seven points for the Tigers who improve to 3-4 on the season.
Steven Iser, Jeff Young and Kurt Bonnet led Waynesburg with 10 points apiece. The Yellow Jackets will face Mt. Aloysius in the consolation game at 1 pm tomorrow.
