Men's basketball falls in season opener at Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, NY -- The RIT (0-1) men's basketball team began the 2010-11 season with a 71-68 loss at College of Staten Island on Tuesday night.  The Dolphins held off a late rally by the Tigers for the win. Senior Anthony Terry (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) led RIT with 17 points, including 11 in the first half.

RIT led 34-32 at the half, but Staten Island pulled away in the second half to lead by 10 points with 6:33 remaining in regulation.

The Tigers went on a run, outscoring the Dolphins 15-6 over a 4:16 span, cutting the lead to one point on a pair of free throws by junior Brendan Harder (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) with 2:27 remaining. 

Both teams exchanged possessions until Staten Island's Bloochy Magliore hit a jumper with 13 seconds remaining which gave the Dolphins a three-point lead. 

Terry had a chance to send the game into overtime, but his three pointer missed at the buzzer giving the Dolphins a 71-68 win.

Terry led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-20 shooting from the floor. The senior guard went 2-for-8 from behind the arc, dished out two assists and had four steals.

Junior Justin Heisig (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Tigers, going 5-of-7 from the floor.

Harder added 11 points and eight rebounds, while senior Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) scored nine points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out five assists.

RIT shot 43.3% from the floor and went 6-for-17 from three point land. Rebounds were even at 36 apiece, and the Tigers had 10 steals, while turning the ball over 16 times.

The Tigers are off until December 1 when they compete in the 45th Annual Wendy's College Classic, the nation's longest running in-season Division III tournament.
