PITTSFORD, NY - The RIT men's basketball team (2-3, 0-1 Empire 8) had its two-game winning streak snapped, falling on the road at St. John Fisher (3-1, 1-0 Empire 8) in the Empire 8 opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon. RIT struggled from the field, shooting just 30 percent for the game.
Trailing 26-16 at halftime, the Tigers opened the second half by hitting six of its their first eight shots, culminating with a 3-pointer by
Anthony Terry (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) to cut the Fisher lead to 33-30, but went cold soon after, scoring just three points in nearly nine minutes.
Terry led all scorers with 17 points and added four assists. He was the only scorer in double figures for the Tigers.
Adam Sweet (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport),
Brendan Harder (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta), and
Marcus Lowe (Anchorage, AK/Service) each had seven points apiece in the loss.
Michael Wopperer led the Cardinals with 14 points. Jordan Koch added 11 points. Matt Newman added eight points, eight boards, and four assists.
Fisher won the battle of the boards, 37-30. RIT turned the ball over just nine times, but shot just 17-for-56 from the field. Fisher shot 20-for-42 (47.6 percent).
RIT struggled offensively in the first half, scoring a season-low 16 points and shooting just 19 percent (5-for-27) from the field. The Tigers totaled just one first half assist on five field goals. Terry gave RIT its first lead of the game, 15-14, with 6:59 left in the half, before the Cardinals went on a 12-1 run to end the stanza. The Tigers missed all five of their field goal attempts the rest of the way in the half.
The Tigers are right back in action on Sunday, as they host Empire 8 foe Stevens at 2 p.m.
