CHATTANOOGA, TN – RIT sophomores
Yu Tanimoto and
Alexander Sinclair competed at the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships, Saturday.
In singles, Tanimoto faced No. 4 Max Lindstrom (Swarthmore). Tanimoto took the opening set, 6-4. Lindstrom won the second set, 6-4 and secured the win with a 6-0 in the third and deciding set.
In doubles, Tanimoto and Yu took on Trinity's (TX) Kishan Kersten and Jared Perry. The Tigers won the opening game. Tied 1-1, Kersten and Perry broke the Tigers to take a 2-1 lead and went on to win the set, 6-4.
Kersten and Perry won the first game of the second set. Tanimoto and Sinclair won the next two games to take a 2-1 lead. Kersten and Perry won the following game to tie it up at 2-2 before Tanimoto and Sinclair took a 3-2 lead with a win in the fifth game. Kersten and Perry won the next four games to win 6-3
Tanimoto and Alexander are RIT's first tennis players in program history to compete at the NCAA Championships.
Tanimoto earned the NCAA Region II automatic bid in singles while he and Sinclair earned the Region II automatic bid in doubles. They are the first two men's tennis players in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
