MEET RESULTS ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's swimming and diving team dominated in the swimming events, winning the first seven of eight meets, beating Fredonia (0-4), 177-121 at the Judson Pool Saturday afternoon, the third straight victory for the Tigers (3-1).
RIT started its day with a narrow victory in the 200-yard medley relay, as
Derek Rothrock (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods), Matt Butler,
Derek Brown (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood), and
Thomas Regan (Hollis, NH/Hollis Brookline) took home first place honors with a time of 1:40.45, just ahead of Fredonia's team by a second.
The Tigers had multiple events where the swimmers finished in the top two or three.
Joe Wang (Framingham, MA/Framingham),
Austin Hayes (Aurora, OH/Aurora), and
Carl Schlehr (Maineville, OH/Kings) finished 1-2-3 respectively in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Wang won the event with a time of 10:28.75, just ahead of Hayes (10:39.91) and Schlehr (10:47.79). In the 200-yard backstroke,
John O'Gorman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth),
Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area),
Daniel Yuen-Schat (Honolulu, HI/Kaiser) took the top three spots, as O'Gorman won in 2:02.92.
Rothrock picked up the second of his two victories, winning the 100-yard backstroke in 55.66, edging out teammate O'Gorman, who finished just over a second later.
Matt Berus (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) and
John Stelmack (Toccoa, GA/Stephens County) finished 1-2 in the 200-yard breaststroke, as Berus (2:20.08) beat Stelmack by just over a second (2:21.33). Hayes won in the 500-yard freestyle, as his time of 5:04.20 was just ahead of Wang's time of 5:09.22.
In other individual events, Brown picked up his second victory in the 50-yard freestyle, winning in a time of 22.14, and Matt Butler won the closest race in the afternoon in the 100-yard breaststroke by just .14 seconds, at 1:02.55.
On the diving board, Ben Hamilton had the highest finish for the Tigers in the 3-meter dive, finishing fourth with 220.85 points. In the 1-meter dive, Hamilton placed second to Fredonia's Arron Carlson, finishing with 218.75 points.
The Tigers will next take to the road, traveling to the North Country to take on Liberty League rival St. Lawrence (2-0), on Nov. 7 at 1 p.m.
