Balenton's 22 not enough as men's basketball loses at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Despite twenty-two points from Jameel Balenton (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers) and fifteen from freshman #J.P. Reagan#, the RIT (6-12, 2-7 Liberty League) men's basketball team lost 72-55 at Union College (17-3, 9-2 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Schenectady Tuesday night.

RIT led by seven early in the first half. Balenton and Reagan combined to score all seven RIT points to open the game, giving the Tigers and early 7-0 lead.

Union came back, but a bucket by Nick Dobson (Corning, NY/Corning West) with 11:08 to play in the opening half gave the Tigers a 12-5 lead, matching their largest lead of the half.

RIT held the lead until the 7:48 mark when Keven Donohue drained a three pointer giving the Dutchmen an 18-16 lead, their first of the game.

Reagan tied the score with a jumper on RIT's next possession, and free throw by Balenton with 6:59 to play gave RIT a slim 21-20 lead.

RIT kept the score close down the closing moments of the first half, but a 7-0 run by the Dutchmen over the final 3:38 of the half gave Union a 35-26 halftime lead. Balenton scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half to lead the Tigers.

RIT kept pace with Union to start the second half, staying within eight points of the Dutchmen, but a 12-4 run by Union broke the game open.

RIT shot 32.8 percent from the field on 20-of-61 shooting. The Tigers made 7-of-24 from behind the arc, and were 8-of-12 from the foul line.

Balenton finished with 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting, including three three pointers. He went 5-for-5 from the field and led RIT with eight rebounds.

Reagan was 5-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three point range. The freshman swingman made 2-of-3 foul shots and had an assist and a block.
