GENESEO, NY - The RIT softball team (11-25) dropped both ends of its possible season-ending doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Vic Raschi Field on the campus of SUNY Geneseo (17-17). The Tigers dropped game one, 2-1, then loss game two, 11-3 in five innings. Tomorrow's season-ending doubleheader at D'Youville has been canceled and will not be made up. The Tigers will look to possibly add a non-conference doubleheader in the next few days.
In game one, RIT jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, as with one out,
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn) singled and stole second base.
Tori Nadow (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) reached on error by the first baseman, scoring McCormick to give RIT the lead. RIT threatened to add on, as
Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) singled, giving RIT runners on first and second with nobody out, but
Michelle Tabisz (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) hit a rocket right at the third baseman, allowing her to step on third and throw to first for the out, ending the inning.
Geneseo received all of the offense they needed in the bottom of the second inning, as Elise Porreca singled and scored on a two-run home run by Lexi Williams.
From there, both Geneseo hurler Mary Bostick and RIT starting pitcher
Sarah Collmus (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) kept the offenses off the board. In the sixth inning, RIT had runners on first and second with one out, but could not get the tying run home. In the seventh,
Brittany Purcell (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area) doubled with one out, but was stranded to end the game.
Bostick earned the win, allowing five hits, while striking out four batters. Collmus took the tough-luck loss, allowing five hits in six innings.
In game two, Geneseo scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The first four batters reached base and scored, culminating with a bases clearing double by Sam Trapasso. Stefanie Rosenberg and Lauren Eggelston each added two run singles later in the inning.
Tabisz supplied the offense for RIT hitting two home runs and driving in all three runs. She hit a solo shot in the second then added a two-run homer in the third. The Tigers now have 22 home runs on the season, a team record.
Kelly Meegan (Bristol, NH/Newfound Regional ) had RIT's only other hit, a lead-off double in the fifth inning.
Katie Gallagher earned the win on the mound for Geneseo, allowing three hits and an earned run with six strikeouts in five innings. Trapasso and Ashley Fillmore each recorded three hits for Knights. The first five hitters in the lineup were 10-for-13 with two walks, scored 10 runs and drove in 10 runs.
