KEUKA PARK, NY - The RIT softball (10-20) split a wild non-league doubleheader at Keuka (13-7) on a beautiful Thursday afternoon. Keuka took game one 6-3, while RIT won a crazy game two, 11-10. RIT led Keuka 8-0 after two innings before the Storm roared back with 10 straight runs to lead 10-8 after five innings. RIT would not quit however, scoring the final three runs to earn the win.
RIT scored six times in the top of the first inning of game two, the big hit coming from
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), who clubbed a grand slam. RIT made it 8-0 in the second on a run scoring double by
Brittany Purcell (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area) and a RBI single from
Tori Nadow (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill).
Keuka roared back with five in the bottom of the third on eight hits, then tied the game in the fourth on a two-run single from Brooke Lovell. The Storm made it 10-8 an inning later scoring on a wild pitch and a single.
RIT tied the game at 10-10 after loading the bases with nobody out then having Wolcott hit a grounder to second that would have driven in one run get through to score a second run. In the seventh inning, RIT once again loaded the bases with one out, and this time,
MIchelle Tabisz (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) would give RIT the lead for good with a run-scoring single.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Kelly Meegan (Bristol, NH/Newfound Regional ) would set the Storm down 1-2-3 to earn her first collegiate win. She threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Purcell had a tremendous game, tallying season highs of four hits and four runs scored with two runs batted in. She was 4-for-5 overall and finished a home run shy of the cycle. Wolcott drove in a season-high five runs, while
Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) was 3-for-5 with a double, run scored, and run batted in. Nadow was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.
Lovell drove in four runs in game two for the Storm, while Elly Disbrow was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
In game two, Danielle Gravel shut the Tigers bats down for the first six innings, allowing three hits before RIT exploded for three runs and four hits in the seventh inning. Gravel moved to 9-2 in 2012, allowing seven hits and two walks in the complete-game effort.
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ),
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn), and
Brittney LaVoie (Plattsburgh, NY/Ticonderoga) drove in runs with hits in the seventh inning.
The Tigers return to action this weekend by playing its final four Liberty League games. On Saturday, RIT travels to Union to play a pair at 1 p.m. The following afternoon, RIT stays on the road for two against Renesselaer, also at 1 p.m.
