ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (9-17, 2-4 Liberty League) earned a doubleheader split against visiting St. Lawrence (14-8, 1-5 Liberty League), winning game one, 7-4, then falling in game two, 6-5 in eight innings on Saturday afternoon at RIT Field.
RIT hurler
Sarah Collmus (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) earned the win in game one. She started the game and threw five scoreless innings before being replaced by
Tiffany Gundler (North Adams, MA/Drury ) with RIT leading 4-0. The Saints cut RIT's lead to 7-4 with a runner on in the seventh, when Collmus re-entered, and retired the final three batters, which is normally scored a save, but NCAA rules prohibit the same pitcher from earning a win and a save in the same game. She allowed just three hits in six total innings.
The Tigers took advantage of four St. Lawrence errors, leading to three unearned runs.
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) was 2-for-3 with a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving RIT a commanding 6-1 lead.
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) was 2-for-4, while
Michelle Tabisz (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) doubled.
Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) and
Tori Nadow (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) each scored and drove in a run.
Chelsea Hanno hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning for the Saints. Aisha O'Connor and Lauren Weisbarth each had two hits.
In game two, RIT rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning, only to see St. Lawrence win in the eighth inning on a solo home run from Rebecca Allen.
St. Lawrence hurler Kyle Plimpton shut down the RIT bats through the first six innings, allowing just one hit, a first inning single by
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn), keeping the Tigers off balance.
RIT caught up to her in the seventh, scoring five times on six hits to tie the game at 5-5. Tabisz led off with a single, followed by a single from
Brittany Purcell (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area). Wolcott drove in Tabisz with a double, then
Brittani Scharlau (Alexander, NY/Alexander) reached on an infield single. With two outs, Griffin doubled to right field to make it a 5-3 game, then McCormick tied the game with a two-run double to left field.
Down 6-5 in the eighth inning, Tabisz led off with a walk, then moved to third on a long single by Nadow. After Nadow stole second, the Tigers needed just a base hit to potentially win the game, but Plimpton struck out the next three batters to end the game. Plimpton finished with 12 strikeouts.
Weisbarth did the damage for the Saints in the top of the first inning, driving in two runs with a double down the left field line. St. Lawrence tacked on a run in the fourth inning off a RIT throwing error, then added two in the seventh inning.
Between games, RIT honored seniors
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and
Michelle Tabisz (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch).
RIT returns to action on Wednesday with its final home contests of the season against Alfred. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
