Softball opens 2012 season by splitting a pair of games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, FL - The RIT softball team (1-1) opened the 2012 season by splitting a pair of exciting games at the Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers opened with a walk-off win, 4-2 over Clark, then dropped a heartbreaker to Bridgewater State, 12-11 in nine innings.

In the opener against Clark, RIT trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) led off with a single, then Brittany Kemp (Dansville, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) followed with a single of her own. Freshman Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) then came up and slammed a three-run homer to win the game. Wolcott finished 2-for-3. On the mound, Kemp picked up the win, firing a three-hit complete game, striking out five batters.

RIT dropped a tough decision to Bridgewater coming back to tie the game on three different occasions before losing in extra innings. Tori Nadow (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) was 3-fir-5 with a home run and three RBI's, while Griffin was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Michelle Tabisz (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) was also 3-for-5 and tied the game with a two run double in the sixth inning.

The Tigers return to action on Monday with contests against Penn State Behrend and Regis College at 9 and 11 a.m. respectively.
