Men's basketball beats D'Youville in Brodie Tournament opener

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (3-4) men's basketball team jumped out to an 18-2 start en route to an 83-71 win over D'Youville College (1-7) in the opening game of the 28th Annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament on Friday. The Tigers will face Keuka College in the championship game tomorrow afternon at 3 pm. D'Youville will face Manhattanville in the consolation game at 1pm.

Junior Jameel Balenton (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers) was one of four Tigers scoring in double figures. He finished with 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists and had four steals to lead RIT. Eric Travis (Chicago,IL/Hinsdale South) added 16 points, and eight rebounds, while Nick Dobson (Corning, NY/Corning West) tallied 15 points and had five rebounds. Mike D'Amico chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.

RIT shot 50 percent from the floor on 30-of-60 shooting. The Tigers were 5-of-17 from behind the arc andmade 18-of-27 free throws. The Tigers held a 45-36 rebounding edge and scored 19 points off of 22 D'Youville turnovers.

Oliver Prince led D'Youville with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Julian Reed scored 15. Jon Gemerek tallied 12 points for the Spartans who fall to 1-7 on the season. D'Youville shot 38.8 percent from the floor on 26-of-67 shooting. The Spartans went 9-of-31 from three point land and were 10-of-10 from the foul line.

RIT scored the first 16 points of the game and led by as many as 18 points in the first half. The Spartans got as close as seven points in the first half, but trailed 46-29 at the break. D'Amico led RIT with 10 points, while Balenton, Dobson and Travis each had seven points.

The Tigers extended their lead in the second half to as many as 21 points. The Spartans were able to cut the lead down to 11, but they would get no closer as RIT was able to control the game and go on to the win.

RIT will face Keuka in a re-match from earlier in the season when RIT beat Keuka 71-67 in Keuka Park, NY. The championship game gets under way at 3 pm on the floor of Clark Gym.
