ELMIRA, NY - The RIT softball team (19-10, 9-3 Empire 8) extended its winning to seven games, winning game one of Friday's doubleheader at Elmira, 5-4 in eight inning, but had the streak snapped in game two, dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker to the Soaring Eagles (8-12, 4-8 Empire 8). RIT lost game two despite allowing just one hit.
In game two, Jacqueline Gibson hit a solo home run in the first inning for the Soaring Eagles, which would be the only run needed. Alex Puglisi was excellent on the mound for Elmira, allowing just two hitsand two walks, while striking out five in the complete game effort.
RIT hurler
Brittany Kemp (Dansville, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) was brilliant, as the home run allowed was one her only two blemishes on the day. She walked one and struck out nine in the hard luck defeat.
In game one, RIT built a 4-0 lead, but Elmir rallied with a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to tie the game. In the top of the eighth inning, RIT placed runners on second and third with nobody out. Kemp hit a ground ball to third that scored
Michelle Tabisz (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) with the winning run. In the bottom half of the inning, Elmira had the leadoff hitter reach second before being erased on a fielders choice.
Senior hurler
Carlissa Cole (Alden, NY/Alden) picked up her seventh straight win, improving to 11-3 in 2011. She allowed 10 hits and four runs in the complete game effort.
Tabisz hit a two-run homer in the first inning, her third of the year, tying her for the team lead with Cole.
It was RIT's 15th home run of the season, just two shy of the school mark for most in a season.
