ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (18-9) extended its winning streak to six games, earning a doubleheader sweep against SUNY Geneseo at RIT Field on Wednesday afternoon. RIT won game one, 7-5, then took game two, 10-1 in six innings. RIT recorded 21 hits in the two games, played on the warmest day of the spring season to date.
In game one, RIT raced to leads of 3-0, 5-2, and 7-4, fending off a handful of Geneseo rallies to pick up the win. The game ended with Geneseo stranding runners on second and third. The Knights had the tying run on second with one out, but a pop-up, and ground out to shortstop ended the rally.
Senior hurler
Carlissa Cole (Alden, NY/Alden) picked up her sixth straight win, pitching around Tiger errors. She allowed six hits and five unearned runs en route to the complete game win. She retired 10 straight batters in the middle frames. Cole also helped her own cause, ripping a two-run double off the left field wall to give RIT a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Tori Nadow (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, and two RBIs.
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn) drilled a pair of doubles and scored a run, while
Emily Courtney (Berlin, CT/Kingswood-Oxford) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and run batted in.
With RIT leading 5-4 in the fifth,
Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) hit a sinking liner to centerfield that eluded a diving Lexi Williams and dropped, scoring what proved to be two crucial insurance runs.
Katie Gallagher took the loss on the mound for Geneseo. Six different Knights recorded base hits, as RIT out-hit Geneseo, 10-6.
Just like game one, RIT jumped on Geneseo with three first inning runs en route to the win.
Sophomore pitcher
Brittany Kemp (Dansville, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) was tremendous for the Tigers, striking out 11 batters to pick up her eighth win of the season. She was also 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in and a run scored.
Freshman third baseman
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) hit her first collegiate home run, a blast over the left field fence in the fourth inning that made it 4-0 RIT. Courtney hit a towering home run, her second of the year in the following inning to make it 5-1.
It was RIT's 13th and 14th home runs of the season, just four shy of the single-season team record.
Nadow was 2-for-4 with a double, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Courtney drove in a pair of runs
The Tigers return to action on Friday with a pair of crucial Empire 8 contests at Elmira, which gets underway at 3 p.m.
