Softball continues winning ways with sweep at Alfred

Tigers improve to 8-2 in Empire 8 play, 16-9 overall.

HORNELL, NY -
The RIT softball team (16-9, 8-2 Empire 8) continued its winning ways, winning both ends of a doubleheader at Empire 8 rival Alfred (11-8, 2-6 Empire 8) on Friday afternoon at Hornell High School.  The Tigers took game one, 3-2, then won game two, 5-2.  RIT remains tied for first place in the conference standings with Ithaca and St. John Fisher.

In game one, senior hurler Carlissa Cole (Alden, NY/Alden) continued her strong form, throwing a complete-game six-hitter, allowing just one earned run, while walking two, and striking out one for her fifth straight victory.  She improves to 9-3 in 2011.

Cole also was one of the hitting stars for RIT, breaking a 2-2 tie in the top of the fourth by slamming her team best third home run of the season.  It was also her 13th career homer, second most all-time at the university.

Over her last six appearances (five starts), Cole is 5-0 with five complete games, a 0.88 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 25 hits allowed, nine walks, and 28 strikeouts over her last five outings, spanning 39 2/3 innings.

Junior second baseman Allee Emmi (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) hit her second home run of the season in the top of the second inning. a two-run shot to give RIT a 2-1 lead. 

Tori Nadow (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) was 2-for-3.  Cole scored twice and had two hits.  Nicole Hedrick was 2-for-4 for Alfred.

In game two, Emily Courtney (Berlin, CT/Kingswood-Oxford) tied a Tiger single game record by clubbing two triples.  She scored twice and drove in a run.  Cole added a two-run triple in the third inning, as RIT scored four times to open up a 4-0 lead.  Emmi added two hits.

Sophomore Brittany Kemp (Dansville, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) earned her seventh win of the season, allowing four hits and two unearned runs, striking out 10 batters.  It is her sixth career game of at least 10 strikeouts.

The TIgers return to action on Saturday, as they host Nazareth in their final Empire 8 home doubleheader of the season.  First pitch is at 1 p.m.
