GENEVA, NY -- The RIT men's basketball team was defeated by Roberts Wesleyan College 82-72 at the Wendy's College Classic consolation game Friday night from Bristol Gym on the campus of Hobart College.
RIT jumped out to a quick 26-15 lead in the first 9:29 of the first half. Junior
Justin Heisig (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) led the Tigers with 11 of the Tigers 26 points in that stretch. The Tigers forced the Raiders into 14 first-half turnovers, while committing only seven.
The Raiders responded with a 16-3 run over a 5:22 span, taking a 31-29 lead on a three pointer by Dan foley.
RIT closed out the half on a 15-9 run to take the 44-40 lead into halftime.
The Tigers came out cold in the second half, going scoreless over a 5:39 span midway through the half. The Raiders went on a 13-4 over a 6:41 span to take a 70-56 lead.
Brendan Harder (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta)'s dunk with 5:15 to play broke the scoreless drought by the Tigers, pulling them within 12 points, sparking a Tigers run.
Anthony Terry (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) capped off the 6-2 mini-run by the Tigers with a layup, which cut the Roberts Wesleyan lead to eight points.
Heisig started the play with a steal at mid-court. He went in for the lay-up but had his shot blocked by Justin Andreozzi. Terry followed the play, grabbed the rebound and laid it in to make it 72-64.
Terry's three-pointer with 1:45 to play got RIT to within five points. The TIgers would get no closer as the Raiders made their free throws down the stretch.
The Tigers shot 43.3% from the floor on 26-of-60 shooting.
Anthony Terry (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) led RIT with 27 points. He was 9-of-16 from the floor, including six three pointers.
"I thought we showed life offensively," stated RIT Head Coach
Bob McVean. "We committed some unforced errors in the second half that I think was the difference."
Harder finished with 17 points and six rebounds. Heisig also had 17 points.
RIT will play the loser between St. John FIsher and Geneseo in the seventh place game on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm at Nazareth Colleg.
