ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore hurler
Carlissa Cole (Alden, NY/Alden) (Alden, NY/Alden) threw her first collegiate no-hitter in game one, while sophomore shortstop
Emily McPherson (Pompey, NY/Pompey) (Pompey, NY/Fabius-Pompey) hit a walk-off grand slam in game two, as the RIT softball team (8-14) swept D'Youville College (6-12) by scores of 9-0 in five innings and 6-2 in eight innings on Wednesday afternoon at RIT Field.
Cole needed just 42 pitches in five innings to record the no-hitter, RIT's first since
Mary Keegan (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) threw one against Notre Dame College on March 5, 2004. She walked just one batter, the lead-off hitter in the second inning and struck out three for her sixth win of the season.
The Tigers scored two runs in the second inning of game one and broke the game open with six runs in the third inning.
Jen Hayden (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored to lead the way offensively for RIT. The three hits and runs batted in were career-highs.
Katie Fitzpatrick (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) and
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn) (Auburn, NY/Auburn) each went 2-for-3. Fitzpatrick also scored and drove in a run, while McCormick had two bunt singles and scored a run.
Jenna Mausolf (Hudson, NY/Hudson) (Hudson, NY/Hudson) scored a pair of runs.
In game two, D'Youville scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
RIT clawed back to score a run in the fourth and one in the sixth to tie the game. Cole drove in RIT's first run with a ground out in the fourth inning and had a chance to break the tie in the sixth, but grounded out with runners on second and third to end the frame.
Lisa Fronczak (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) hit a sacrifice fly to score
Allee Emmi (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) to tie the game at 2 in the sixth.
With Fitzpatrick placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth inning, McCormick placed a perfect bunt between the pitcher and third baseman to reach. McCormick then stole second. Hayden hit a rope up the middle that looked like it would win the game, but it bounced right off of D'Youville pitcher Hannah Norton's shin, right to the catcher, who tagged out Fitzpatrick. After a walk to Emmi loaded the bases, McPherson crushed a fastball over the fence in centerfield for her team-best third home run of the season.
D'Youville out-hit RIT, 10-6. All nine starters had a hit for the Spartans, while Karen Kingsley recorded two hits.
Cole, who came on in relief of
Sarah Hamel (Templeton, MA/Narragansett Regional) (Templeton, MA/Narragansett Regional) with two on and nobody out in the top of the third inning, pitched six scoreless innings to pick up her second win of the day and seventh of the season. Cole allowed five hits and struck out eight batters, while walking none. She lowered her earned run average from 2.06 to 1.62.
Emmi was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks in game two for RIT.
RIT is right back in action on Thursday, as they host Medaille in a non-conference doubleheader, starting at 3 p.m.
