Men's basketball falls at home to Stevens

ROCHESTER, NY - Visiting Stevens (6-1, 2-0 Empire 8) ended the game on an 11-3 run over the final 3:54, to hand the RIT men's basketball team (2-4, 0-2 Empire 8) its second straight Empire 8 defeat, 69-62 on Sunday afternoon at Clark Gym.

Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) gave RIT its final lead of the game, 59-58 with a jumper from in tight with 3:54 left to play.  Stevens would take the lead 1:18 later on a pair of free throws by Russ Thompson and hold the Tigers to just two points the rest of the way.  Mike Cutri made a 3-pointer with 1:37 left that gave the Ducks a four-point lead.  RIT was 1-for-5 with three turnovers over the final 3:54. 

The Tigers were not helped out by the officials, as they committed 23 personal fouls to just 10 by Stevens.  RIT also turned the ball over 17 times to just nine by Stevens.  There were just 51 total rebounds in the contest, with RIT winning that battle, 28-23.

RIT shot 53.2 percent on the afternoon (25-for-47).  They shot at least 50 percent in both halves.  Stevens drained exactly half of their field goals (24-for-48). 

Cutri led the Ducks with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.  He was 4-for-4 from 3-point range.  George Greco scored 15 points, while Simon Smith tallied 12 points and added eight boards.

Scott Young (Almond, NY/Hornell) was the only Tiger in double figures, with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field,  He drilled all three of his 3-point attempts and added six boards.  Young scored 11 of his 13 points over the opening 20 minutes of play.  Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) and Shawn Roe (Corning, NY/Corning East) both tallied eight points.

Anthony Terry (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) and Marcus Lowe (Anchorage, AK/Service) each scored six points and dished out four assists.  Terry also recorded three steals.  Brendan Harder (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) scored six points and blocked three shots, while Daryl Anderson also chipped in with six points.

Stevens led 36-35 after an action packed first half which saw both teams shoot tremendously well.  Stevens was 14-of-25 (56 percent), while RIT shot 56.5 percent (13-of-23).

RIT held a five-point lead in the first half on two occasions.  There were seven lead changes and six ties during that span.  Overall, the lead changed hands 12 times.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, as they host Fisher (Mass.) College in first round action of the 2009 Harold J. Brodie Tournament.  That contest begins at 8 p.m.
