Tigers Remain Unbeaten in Empire 8 Play

ELMIRA, NY -- The RIT men's basketball team opened their game versus Elmira with a 16-1 run and never looked back, leading 46-16 at the half and going on to the 87-42 win over the Soaring Eagles on Saturday afternoon. The win improves RIT to 14-4 overall and 10-0 in the Empire 8.

The Tigers came out firing early in the first half, taking an 18-3 lead with 15:31 remaining on a jumper from #Adam Sweet (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport)# (Weedsport, NY). RIT's defense was stifling, holding Elmira to 16 first-half points, leading 46-16 at the half.

Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) (Voorheesville, NY) dominated down low in the first half, scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Scott Young (Almond, NY/Hornell) (Almond, NY/Hornell) and Sweet each chipped in five points. Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) (Strongsville, OH) scored four points and grabbed three assists.

RIT continued their hot shooting in the second half shooting 48.4% from the floor on 15-of-31 shooting. The Tigers dominated on the glass out-rebounding the Soaring Eagles 47-34.

The Tigers stretched their lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 49 points. Eleven of the 17 players on the roster scored for RIT as everyone got a chance to play.

Carson finished with a career-high 29 points, 12 rebounds and had two blocks.  He was 9-of-11 from the field and 11-for-13 from the free-throw line.  Young chipped in 13 points and five rebounds and Adam Sweet (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) scored 11 points. 

RIT shot 47.1% from the floor on 32-of-68 shooting. The Tigers made 7-of-18 three pointers and went 16-of-22 from the line.

The 42 points allowed by the Tigers was the second lowest point total this season. RIT held Elmira to just 24.7% shooting from the floort and forced the Soaring Eagles into 15 turnovers.

RIT will look to go 11-0 in the Empire 8 play for the first time in school history when they host Alfred University on Tuesday, February 3 at 8 p.m. at Clark Gym.
