PITTSFORD, NY -- Nazareth's Kidera Gymnasium was the site for RIT's first round game at the 43rd annual JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament. The Tigers, the #2 seed, faced #7 Nazareth College and were upset by the Golden Flyers, 87-73.
It was the 12th time in 14 years that these two teams have met in the Chase Tournament and the fourth straight year.
Nazareth moves on to face #3 SUNY Geneseo in the semifinals on Friday evening at 8:15 pm. RIT will face #6 SUNY Brockport in the consolation bracket on Friday at 3:30 pm.
Nazareth led by as many as 13 points in the first half and held a 41-30 lead at the break. The Golden Flyers closed out the first half with an 18-8 run taking an 11-point lead into the break.
RIT shot 37.0% from the floor in the opening half on 10-of-27 shooting from the floor. The Tigers made 5-of-12 from three-point land and made 5-of-7 free throws.
Scott Young (Almond, NY/Hornell) (Almond, NY/Hornell) and
Adam Sweet (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (Weedsport, NY) paced RIT offensively, scoring eight points apiece. #
Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville)# (Voorheesville, NY) scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds.
RIT was able to close the gap to six-points several times in the second half on the strength of
Scott Young (Almond, NY/Hornell)'s long-range shooting. All 15 of his points in the half came on three-pointers and he finished with a team-high 23 points.
Obi Ukachukwu's (Freeport, NY) lay-up with 13:18 remaining in the game cut Nazareth's lead to 55-49 but that would be as close as the Tigers would get. The Flyers outscored RIT 32-24 over the final 13 minutes to improve to 3-8 on the season.
The Flyers opened the lead back up to double-digits on the strength of strong shooting. Nazareth shot 57.1% from the floor in the second half, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.
Corey McAdam led the Flyers with 23 points and 12 assists. Jeff DeHimer added 22 points and grabbed six rebounds.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for RIT who fall to 8-4 on the season.
Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) posted his 11th double-double in 12 games this season, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Adam Sweet (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
