ROCHESTER, NY - Junior first baseman
Matt Austin (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) had six hits in two games and became the first player in the history of the RIT baseball program to triple twice in one inning, as the Tigers (12-11, 4-4 Empire 8) extended their winning streak to six games by sweeping Utica (2-17, 0-8 Empire 8) 19-10 in game one and 17-5 in game two on Sunday afternoon at RIT Field.
The Tigers pounded 36 hits, 18 in each game to go along with 36 runs scored on Sunday.
In game one, RIT scored 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to a season-tying 19 runs. RIT scored all 11 third inning runs with two outs, breaking a 5-5 tie. The Tigers scored three more times in the fourth inning to take a 19-6 lead. The 19 runs scored tied a season-high, done twice in the same day at Hilbert on April 3.
Austin finished game one 3-for-4 with the two triples, four runs batted in and two runs scored. The two triples in one game tied a school record. Freshman
Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/LIvonia) (Livonia, NY/Livonia) was 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored, while
Geoff Dornes (Landisville, PA/Hempfiled) (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) went 3-for-4 with two walks.
Matt George (Walton, NY/Walton) (Walton, NY/Walton) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
John Robertson (Stafford, VA/Stafford) (Stafford, VA/Stafford) walked three times and scored three runs.
Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) drove in three runs, while
Ryan Tryt (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) and
Raffaele Parisi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) scored twice and drove in a pair of runs apiece.
Chris Miller (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) was the beneficiary of RIT's offensive outburst, winning his first game of the year on the mound, despite allowing 16 base-runners in five innings. Freshman
Joel Walker (Morrisville, VT/Peoples Academy) (Morrisville, VT/Peoples Academy) came in to throw two scoreless innings.
Utica jumped out to leads of 4-0 in the top of the first inning and 5-1 in the second. Chris Hine was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two stolen bases for Utica. Justin Engelhardt had a pair of hits, runs scored and RBIs.
In game two, the Tigers scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, all with two outs to cap off the unbeaten weekend. The Tigers stole nine bases in the contest, including three by
Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili). The junior center fielder also drove in four runs.
Dornes and Austin added three hits apiece, while
Dave Kernan (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) blasted a home run. Dornes, George and
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) scored three runs each.
Cory Langtry (Moravia, NY/Moravia) (Moravia, NY/Moravia) picked up the win, allowing four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. It was his fourth win of the year.
The Tigers defeated Utica, 10-9 in 12 innings and 7-5 on Saturday.
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday, as they host Medaille at 3 p.m.
