Jacob Meyerson took an 8-3 win in first doubles, while freshmen
Christian Berko and
Grahith Movva scored an 8-5 victory in third doubles leading RIT to a 5-4 win over Vassar in Liberty League action at the Gordon Field House, Saturday.
Heading into the final singles match, the teams were tied 4-4. Meyerson cemented RIT's first program win over Vassar after recording 6-3 and 6-4 wins at sixth singles after each team won three singles matches each and the Tigers' edge in doubles play being the difference.
"Today was a huge day for RIT tennis," RIT head men's tennis coach
Tom Linhart said.
"Vassar has incredible pedigree in the Liberty League and to open the year with a win over them, puts us in the driver's seat going forward. It was a true team effort today for us. It was great to see every guy fight hard and pull out wins whether they were freshman or upperclassmen."
The match went back-and-forth starting with Wolicki and Meyerson's win, but Vassar responded by taking second doubles, 8-1, to tie the match at 1-1. Berko and Movva took third doubles to give the Tigers a 2-1 edge heading into singles play.
Vassar tied the match at 2-2 by taking first singles, 6-4, 6-1. The Tigers responded by taking the next two singles matches. First, Movva took second singles, 6-3, 7-5, and was followed by freshman
Joel Pho's win at fourth singles, 7-6, 6-2, to put the Tigers up 4-2.
Vassar responded by taking fifth singles, 6-2, 6-1, and then tied the match at 4-4 after winning third singles in the only three-set decision of the afternoon. Wolicki dropped his first set, 6-2, before evening the bout with a 6-4 second-set win before falling in the final set, 6-4.
Men's tennis next hosts RPI in Liberty League action on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 3:30 p.m. at the Midtown Athletic Club.
