TROY, NY – The RIT men's swimming and diving team (0-1) opened the 2018-19 season by falling to defending Liberty League Champion Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 203-96 at Robison Pool Saturday.
Joe Wang (Framingham, MA/Framingham) emerged victorious in the 1,000-yard freestyle, as he completed the event in a time of 10:17.88.
Eric Moss (Irvington, NY/Irvington) was third in the event, 11 seconds back.
The 400-yard freestyle relay of
Andres Orbe (North Bergen, NJ/Saint Peter's),
Tyler Allen (Newark, NY/Newark), Moss and
Mark Truskinovsky (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) placed second in a time of 3:19.57. To start the day, RIT's 200-yard medley relay team of
Derek Rothrock (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods),
Shawn Nevers (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial),
Ben Metzger (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and Orbe was also second in 1:38.96.
Will Brown (Boulder, CO/Fairview) enjoyed an impressive second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, hitting the wall in 22.44 seconds.
Truskinovsky was also second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.67), while Moss (2:00.99) and Wang (2:06.25) finished second and third, respectively, in the 200-yard butterfly. Moss was also second in the 500-yard freestyle, completing the event in 5:08.07. Jimmy Antonelli was four seconds back in third.
Orbe placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.14) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (55.28 seconds), while Nevers was third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.74).
Brendan Kapp (Springfield, VA/Trinity School) was also third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.22, while
Ethan Davis (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) had the same finish in the 100-fly.
Wil Seifried (Springfield, PA/Springfield) recorded a time of 2:12.35 in the 200-yard individual medley to finish third.
Divers
Chase Van Duyne (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and
Jon Bauer (Fairview, PA/McDowell) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 1-meter event. Bauer was also fourth in the 3-meters.
The energy on deck was amazing," said RIT head coach
Phil Baretela. "It was great to get our first races of the season in against a strong team in RPI." Great job from our women's team pulling out a win against a great program.
RIT is right back in action with its opening home meet of the season versus Oswego State University at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening.
