Matt Abt named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week

ROCHESTER, NY - Junior defenseman Matt Abt (Leduc, Alberta/Whitecourt Wolverines ) of the RIT men's hockey team, was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week on Tuesday, for the week ending Feb. 26, 2017. It is Abt's first weekly honor of the season and third of his collegiate career.

Abt recorded a career-high three points on two goals and an assist and was plus-2 in a 7-1 win over Mercyhurst to wrap up the regular season Saturday night. Abt scored the eventual game-winning goal, a one-timer on the power-play midway through the first period. He went coast to coast on the rush for the primary assist on Garrett McMullen (Churchville, NY/Trail Smoke Eaters)'s second period goal and added his second tally of the night on a 2-on-1 rush early in the third period. Abt also fired seven shots on goal. He now has 13 points on three goals and 10 assists this season.

RIT is the No. 6 seed in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament and will face No. 11 seed Niagara in a best-of-three first round series starting Friday, March 3 from the Gene Polisseni Center at 7:05. Game two will be Saturday and if necessary, game three will be Sunday.
