SCHENECTADY, NY – The RIT men's tennis team (3-5, 2-2 Liberty League) received a boost to its playoff hopes, picking up a big 8-1 victory over Union (2-9, 1-3 Liberty League) at the Union Tennis courts on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers swept through doubles play to begin the match.
Chandler Daub (Kailua-Kona, HI/Kealakehe) and
Ben Lynaugh (Fairport, NY/Fairport) picked up the victory at first doubles, defeating Brendan Conry Jr. and Max McGeown 8-6. After a big win in second doubles by
Jared Ingoglia (Essex Fells, NJ/West Essex Regional) and
Ken Chou (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott ), 8-2,
Jason Alexander (Austin, TX/Bowie) and
Jared Raphael (Batavia, NY/Batavia) completed the sweep with an 8-4 win against Zach Kaplan and John Shanley.
In singles play, Daub clinched the victory in the top slot, defeating McGeown in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Alexander picked up his second victory of the season, defeating Max Sandberg 6-3, 6-2 in sixth singles. After dropping the first set in his fifth singles match, Dansereau roared back in convincing fashion, defeating Shanley 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Union avoided the shutout, as Spencer Fontein outlasted Lynaugh in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10).
The victory moves RIT into a fourth place tie with Rensselaer in the Liberty League standings with three conference matchups remaining. The top four teams will earn a berth into the Liberty League Tournament on May 7-8.
The Tigers will take on Nazareth in a road match on Monday afternoon that gets underway at 4 p.m.
