ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's swimming and diving team improved to 3-1 in 2016-17, using a balanced attack to defeat fellow Liberty League rival St. Lawrence University (0-3), 182-103 at the Judson Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Six different swimmers won nine events in total for RIT.
Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area),
Spencer Hall (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh), and
John O'Gorman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) each took two events.
The Tigers opened with a convincing win in the 200-yard medley relay. Nick Genovese,
Shawn Nevers (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial), O'Gorman, and
Jason Cook (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) took the win by nearly eight seconds in a time of 1:40.30.
Paine was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke over Genovese and
Scott Brink (Quincy, MA/Boston College ) in a time of 56.96 seconds. He also led a 1-2-3 RIT charge in the 200-backstroke, winning by six seconds in 2:04.83.
Hall took the 200-yard butterfly over teammate
Owen Siebert (Rochester, NY/School of the Arts) by just under a second in 2:11.07. Hall also led a top-three RIT finish in the 100-fly winning by just over a second in 57.04 seconds.
Ryan Leeson (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois) was second and Nick Graca, third.
O'Gorman earned a victory in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.59, with Cook,
Austin Hayes (Aurora, OH/Aurora), and
Adam Reitz (Hilton, NY/Hilton) right behind. O'Gorman also annexed the 100-free by just four one-hundredths of a second over Hayes in 50.37 seconds.
Derek Rothrock (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods) was right behind in third.
Other winners for the Tigers included
Joe Wang (Framingham, MA/Framingham) in the 200-free (1:52.23), Nevers in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.51), and
John Stelmack (Toccoa, GA/Stephens County) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.85).
Wil Seifried (Springfield, PA/Springfield) picked up consecutive second place finishes in both the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle events.
Ben Hamilton (Addison, NY/Addison) was second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 217.80, while
Alex Dieroff (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) was third in the 1-meter, with a tally of 217.05 points.
The Tigers are back in action next Saturday, Nov. 12, at Division II Le Moyne College. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
