FREDONIA, NY – The RIT men's swimming and diving team (2-1) used a balanced effort, holding off host SUNY Fredonia (0-3) by a score of 162.5-137.5 at Steele Hall Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.
RIT won six individual events and one relay.
Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area) led the way for the Tigers, winning three freestyle events. Paine opened the day by winning the 200-yard freestyle by 79 one-hundredths of a second over
Austin Hayes (Aurora, OH/Aurora). Paine led a 1-2-3 finish in the 50-free nipping teammates
Ryan Facchine (Fairview, PA/Fairview) and
Jason Cook (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) in a time of 22.97 seconds. Paine then won the 100-free by just under a second in a time of 49.92 seconds.
With the meet still in doubt, Paine and his 200-yard freestyle relay team clinched the win, taking the final event by just under two seconds. Paine,
Derek Rothrock (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods),
John O'Gorman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth), and Facchine were victorious in a time of 1:29.31.
Rothrock took the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 55.61 seconds, while O'Gorman took the 200-backstroke over Rothrock in 2:02.55.
Hayes and
Wil Seifried (Springfield, PA/Springfield) led a 1-2 finish in the 500-yard freestyle for the Tigers. Hayes won by seven seconds in a time of 5:04.24.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Nick Genovese,
Daniel Yuen-Schat (Honolulu, HI/Kaiser),
Dennis Zhou (Antwerp, NY/Indian River), and Cook opened the day with a second place finish in 1:43.54.
Joe Wang (Framingham, MA/Framingham) was runner-up in the 1,000-free, just missing the victory in 10:37.66.
Spencer Hall (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) was second in the 200-fly (2:08.84) and
John Stelmack (Toccoa, GA/Stephens County) was runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.84). Yuen-Schat was second in the 100-fly (56.08).
In diving action,
Ben Hamilton (Addison, NY/Addison) and
Alex Dieroff (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) were third and fourth, respectively, in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
The Tigers are right back in action next Saturday, Nov. 5, as they host Liberty League rival St. Lawrence University in a dual meet from Judson Pool at 1 p.m.
