SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The RIT baseball team set a school record for best 20-game start in program history, scoring 27 times in doubleheader sweep at Skidmore College (7-15, 1-11 Liberty League) on Saturday afternoon. RIT rolled to a 13-2 win in game one and took game two, 14-7. RIT is now 15-5 overall and 9-2 in league play.
RIT scored at least 10 runs in both ends of a doubleheader for the third time this season. The Tigers have scored 185 runs in 20 games this season, averaging 9.25 per game. They have scored at least 10 runs in a game nine times this season.
In game one, the Tigers had 18 hits. Seven players had at least two hits, including
CJ Bolorin (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta), who was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) was 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and 3 RBIs, while scoring twice.
Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) was 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and two RBIs, while
Ben Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Chris Barr (North Wales, PA/North Penn ) was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, while
Jim Schmidt (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) was 2-for-2, and
Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) was 2-for-5.
Mike Myers (Hamlin, NY/Brockport) and
Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) scored a pair of runs each.
The Tigers jumped on Skidmore by scoring five times in the top of the first and added to the lead with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and four more in the sixth. RIT would add a run in the seventh.
Ethan Humbert (Rose, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) improved to 4-1 on the season, scattering nine hits, while allowing two runs to go along with four strikeouts in five innings.
Brian Sheridan (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) and
Tyler Ramotar (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) fired a scoreless inning of relief each to close out the game.
In game two, RIT once again opened the scoring with five runs in the top of the first inning. After Skidmore scored twice in the bottom of the inning, RIT added a run in the third and two in the fourth to go up 8-2. Skidmore would cut the lead to 8-3 in the fifth before RIT poured it on with two more runs in the seventh inning and four in the eighth to lead 14-3.
Barr was 2-for-5 with his first collegiate home run, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and a pair of RBIs.
Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and 3 RBIs, while
Brian Battaglia (Sliver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake),
Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield), and Flanagan drove in two runs each. Zabel was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, a run scored and driven in.
Flanagan walked two more times and scored three times in game two, giving him team-best totals of 31 runs scored and 22 walks. Gorman now has 12 extra base hits on the season with 28 RBIs and a .746 slugging percentage.
RIT stole six bases and had 12 hits to go along with nine walks in game two.
Rory Little (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) improved to 4-0 on the season, striking out a career-best nine batters in seven innings. He allowed five hits and a pair of earned runs, while walking two batters.
Brett Bouchard (Fairport, NY/Fairport) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Tigers.
The Tigers lead the all-time series between the two schools, 16-10.
RIT is right back in action on Sunday with a doubleheader against the Thoroughbreds that gets underway at 12 p.m.
