ROCHESTER, NY - The Hillside Family of Agencies along with Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield have once again teamed up with RIT women's soccer and the University of Rochester to put on the second annual
Hillside Community Shield, a fundraiser aimed at supporting the youth and families served by Hillside through the game of soccer. This year's game will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Sahlen's Stadium in downtown Rochester at 4:30 p.m.
The Tigers come into the game with a 3-1-2 record after a 2-2 draw at No. 17 SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday. Rochester is 3-2-1 on the season and is looking to rebound after a 4-0 defeat to defending Division III National Champion William Smith last Sunday.
RIT and Rochester played to a 1-1 draw in last season's inaugural women's Hillside Shield.
Gwen Neuhaus (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac) scored for RIT in the fourth minute, while Emily Downie tied the game with her goal in the 86th minute. RIT is 3-2-2 against the Yellowjackets dating back to the 2007 season.
This year The Tigers are honored to have
Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) and
Jamie Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) serve as honorary captains. They are two of the most decorated players in the history of RIT women's soccer.
Jamie Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) played in all 75 games in her career at RIT, serving as a two-year captain. She was a 2013 second team NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Women's All-America selection, the 2013 Liberty League Co-Defensive Player of the Year, a two-time first team All-Liberty League selection and a two-time Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District III Team selection.
Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) was a 2013 third team NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Women's All-East Region selection. She was a first team All-Liberty League selection in 2012, and a second team All-Liberty League selection in 2013. Martinez is a two-time Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District III Team selection.
In 2014, the duo was awarded with RIT's prestigious A. Stephen Walls Leadership Award.
