Softball wraps up 2014 season with doubleheader split at Nazareth

PITTSFORD, NY - The RIT softball team completed its 2014 season with a doubleheader split at crosstown foe Nazareth College through the rain drops on Saturday afternoon. Nazareth won game one, 6-4, before RIT took game two, 8-2. RIT finishes the season with a 7-27 record, while Nazareth finishes 9-21.

In game one, RIT opened the scoring on a Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) single with the bases loaded in the second inning that scored Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton). The Golden Flyers responded with two runs in the second and three in the third, including a two-run home run by Carly Pike that gave them a 5-1 lead. Alexa Farner (Gowanda, NY/Gownanda) doubled home Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) to cut the Nazareth lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning before Nazareth added a run in the fifth. RIT would mount a rally in the seventh, getting a pair of runs, but it was not enough to get the win.

RIT out-hit Nazareth 11-7 in the loss, but committed four errors that led to four unearned runs. Wolcott was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and RBI for the Tigers, while Farner, Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ), and Tori Nadow (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) both went 2-for-4. On the mound, Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) allowed seven hits and two earned runs in the complete-game loss.

Pike was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI's for the Golden Flyers. Nicole White picked up the win on the mound, allowing six hits and two runs over four innings.

In game two, RIT pitcher Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) picked up her first collegiate win, scattering eight hits and four walks, while allowing just one earned run in her first complete-game victory.

RIT jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and added two more runs in the sixth. Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) was 3-for-4 with a first inning home run, the 12th of her career, a double, three runs scored, and two RBI's in her final collegiate game. Emma Sarles (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) landed the big blow, a three-run home run, the first of her collegiate career in the second inning, giving RIT a 5-0 lead. Wolcott was 3-for-4 with a double and run scored, while Nadow was 2-for-3 with a walk in her final collegiate contest.

Today was the final collegiate games for Griffin, McManus, Nadow, Chelsea Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Aquinas), and Brittani Scharlau (Alexander, NY/Alexander).
