Softball gets swept in doubleheader at Alfred in first northern games

ALFRED, NY - The RIT softball team (1-9) was finally able to play its first games in the state of New York, dropping a pair of games at Alfred University (14-4) on a cool, sunny, Wednesday afternoon. Alfred took game one, 8-0 in five innings, and won game two, 12-7.

In game one, Alfred scored four times in the top of the first, three times in the third, and ended the game with a run in the fifth inning. Alison Wickwire was the star for the Saxons, homering and driving in three runs, while striking out 12 batters and allowing just three hits on the mound. Nicole Maher was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI's.

Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West) led the Tigers by going 2-for-2, while Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) was 1-for-1 with a walk. Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) took the loss on the mound for RIT.

In game two, RIT's bats came alive, scoring three times in the second and four runs in the third inning to take a 7-2 lead, before Alfred roared back with the final 10 runs, including seven in the fourth inning.

In the second inning, freshman Amber Libby (Waterboro, ME/Massabesic) hit her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot that scored Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) and Wolcott to make it 3-0 Tigers. After Alfred scored twice in the bottom half of the inning, RIT responded with four more runs in the third. Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) scored on a wild pitch to put RIT up 4-2. Wolcott would reach on an error, scoring Blaker and Alexa Farner (Gowanda, NY/Gownanda) to mske it 6-2 Tigers. Libby would then single in her fourth run of the game, scoring Wolcott to make it 7-2.

Wickwire would hit her second homer of the day to open the fourth inning and end the onslaught with a two-run double to make it 11-7 Saxons. She would finish a triple short of the cycle, driving in four runs. Dana Torchia was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Katelyn Jakobsen would get the win for the Saxons, allowing just one run in 4 2/3 innings of relief with five strikeouts.

RIT pitcher Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) made her first collegiate appearance, taking the loss in 3 2/3 innings of work. Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) would allow just one run over the final 2 1/3 innings. Libby was the offensive star for RIT, going 2-for-3 with four runs batted in.

The Tigers are right back in action on Thursday with a home doubleheader against St. John Fisher that gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
