Softball drops pair of non-conference road contests at SUNY Geneseo

GENESEO, NY - The RIT softball team (4-20) dropped a pair of non-conference road contests at SUNY Geneseo (15-13) on a cold, Wednesday afternoon. Geneseo won game one from Vic Raschi Field by a score of 6-1, then rallied to defeat the Tigers in game two, 3-2.

In game one, Geneseo scored three times in the opening inning, twice more in the second, and added a run in the fourth, before RIT spoiled the shutout with an unearned run in the seventh inning.

Senior Tori Nadow (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) had her first two plate appearances of the season, drawing a walk in the second inning, while doubling to right center field in the fourth. In the seventh inning, Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) led off with a single and Alexa Farner (Gowanda, NY/Gownanda) was hit by a pitch, giving RIT runners on first and second with nobody out. After consecutive outs, Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) singled to left field, scoring Chelsea Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Aquinas), who pinch ran for Griffin.

Elise Porreca led the Knights by going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI's. Pitcher Corrin Spallone improved to 9-3 on the year, scattering six hits in the complete game win with six strikeouts.

In game two, RIT scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead, before Geneseo came back with one in the third and two in the fifth.

Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) doubled home Griffin, who had singled, with two outs in the first inning to give RIT the lead. In the second, Cook walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amber Libby (Waterboro, ME/Massabesic). Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) singled to left center, scoring Cook for a 2-0 lead.

Geneseo cut the RIT lead in half in the third, as Jenna Phillips hit a solo home run. In the fifth, Porreca hit a sacrifice fly with one out, scoring Kayleigh Troia. Kayleigh Blersch gave Geneseo the lead later in the inning, scoring on a wild pitch. Blersch doubled twice in the contest. Mikayla Moore picked up the win for Geneseo, allowing seven hits, while striking out eight batters.

Griffin had a pair of hits for the second straight contest for RIT. On the mound, Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) pitched well, allowing six hits and three runs, while striking out two in six innings.

Griffin was the lone Tiger to record two hits. Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) and Sam Killian (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) also had hits for the Tigers. On the mound, Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) allowed three earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts in the complete game.

Geneseo leads the all-time series between the two schools, 32-24-1.

The Tigers are right back in action on Thursday, with a home doubleheader against Buffalo State. First pitch from Tiger Stadium is at 3 p.m. RIT is also slated to host St. Lawrence on Friday and Rochester on Saturday.
