SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College softball team allowed just five hits while racking up 19 runs and 23 hits in a Liberty League softball sweep over RIT at Alexander Field on Friday. Union won the opener, 15-0 in five innings, and took the second contest, 4-0 to improve to 14-8 overall and 6-0 in league play. Union has won six straight and nine of 10. The Tigers fell to 4-16 and 2-4 in the league.
Alyssa Wolejko won the opener with a two hit shutout in a five inning contest. She improved to 8-4 as struck out 12 and walked just one while allowing just the two singles. At the plate, she was three for four with four RBIs. Joanna Chalifoux was four for four with two RBIs and Allyson Staats had three hits in all three trips to the plate. Kristin Schmidt also drove in two with two hits in the 17 hit attack. Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) took the loss for RIT with five runs and eight hits in three innings.
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) and Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) had singles in game one for the Tigers.
Union scored two in the first on a two run homer by Wolejko, her third of the season. Lindsay Cohen had an RBI double and Schmidt drove in two with a single in the third for a 5-0 lead. The Dutchwomen sent 14 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring 10 times on nine hits. Chelsea Corbin had a three run homer, her team best sixth round tripper of the season, and Wolejko had a two run single in that inning.
Staats continued Union's dominant pitching on the day in game two, as she won her sixth of the year in the 4-0 second game victory. She allowed three hits, all singles, and struck out 10 without walking a batter in the shutout. Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) gave up six hits and four earned in six innings. Neither team had a hit until two out in the fourth when Corbin had a double. Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) had two of the three hits for the Tigers and her leadoff single in the fifth was the first hit of the game for the guests. Griffin also had a single for the Tigers. Union scored all four runs in the fifth higlighted by a bases clearing three run double.
RIT continues its weekend road trip with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at league foe Rensselaer on Saturday.
