ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT men's tennis team (2-8) put up a valiant effort, but fell to host University of Rochester (12-4), ranked 16th regionally by a score of 6-3 at the Goergen Athletic Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Rochester won the first two doubles matches before RIT's first doubles team of
Chandler Daub (Kailua-Kona, HI/Kealakehe) and
Kevin Layer (Clarence, NY/Clarence) pulled out a dramatic 9-8 win over Julian Danko and Tony Zhao, winning the tiebreaker by a 7-4 score.
Rochester swept the second, fourth, and third singles matches to take a 5-1 lead. At first singles, Daub enjoyed a back-and-forth match with Ben Shapiro. Daub won the first set, 7-6, taking the toebreaker by a score of 7-3 before Shapiro answered with a 6-3 win in the second set. The two would wage a tremendous battle in the tiebreaker, with Daub eventually coming out on top, 13-11.
Andrew Reiley (Manorville, NY/Eastport South Manor) secured RIT's third point, rallying to defeat Matthew Golub at fifth singles. Golub took the first set, 6-3, before Reiley roared back to win set two, 6-3, and take the tiebreaker, 10-6.
The Tigers are right back in action on Saturday, with a Liberty League contest at Union that begins at 3 p.m.
