CLERMONT, FL - The RIT softball team (1-5) dropped a pair of contests to nationally-ranked foes at the Dot Richardson Spring Games at the National Training Center on Tuesday. RIT fell to No. 6 Luther College (12-2), 9-1 in five innings and lost to No. 23 North Central College (7-2), 8-0 in five innings.
In the opener against Luther, RIT took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, as
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) slammed a double off the fence in centerfield and scored on a fielders choice by
Kelly Meegan (Bristol, NH/Newfound Regional ). Luther would respond with six runs in the top of the third and three more in the fifth. Griffin would go 2-for-2 in the loss.
Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West),
Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast), and
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) would also add singles.
Kelsey Rose, Hiliary Pennington, and Miranda McCay would combine for seven hits in the win for Luther. Topanga Skiles would earn the win on the mound, with the complete game.
North Central jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and cruise to the win. Hurler Vlasta Mangia threw a five-inning no-hitter, allowing just a fourth inning walk to Cook. Mangia was also 2-for-2 with a run scored and run batted in. Kayla Antle and Amanda Walker had two hits and two RBI's apiece.
RIT wraps up play at the Dot Richardson Spring Games on Wednesday against Middlebury (Vt.) at 9 a.m. and Thomas College (Maine) at 11 a.m.
