PITTSFORD, NY – The RIT men's tennis team opened the 2013-2014 season with a 5-0 win over Nazareth in the Flower City Tournament, then fell to the University of Rochester by a score of 9-0 later in the afternoon.
In the doubles matches it was a clean sweep for the Tigers as all three matches went in favor of RIT. In match one it was the pair of freshman
Ben Lynaugh (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and sophomore
Kevin Layer (Clarence, NY/Clarence) defeating Tyler Williams and Erik Manske 9-8 (teibreaker won 7-4).
Match two in the doubles round was not so close sophomore
Chandler Daub (Kailua-Kona, HI/Kealakehe) and senior
Amos Baptiste (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) took the match 8-3 for RIT.
The final doubles match was taken easily by sophomore
Jason Alexander (Austin, TX/Bowie) and junior
Jake Stocker (Cassville, NY/Sauquoit Valley) for RIT who handled Nick Lord and Brian Rosiek from Nazareth, 8-0.
With the conclusion of the doubles matches, the Tigers headed into singles matches up 3-0 and needing to win just two more matches.
It was Layer coming up big a second time, who was able to down Scott Trobert from Nazareth in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) who grabbed one of those wins for the Tigers. Alexander would grab the second also winning in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) over Nick Lord.
RIT will play on Sunday against Oneonta State at 9 a.m.
