BROCKPORT, NY - Despite a long home run by junior catcher
Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) in game two, the RIT softball team (5-13) dropped a pair of games at The College at Brockport (11-8) on Tuesday afternoon. RIT lost game one 8-1 and went down in game two, 3-2 at the Clark V. Whited Sports Complex.
Down 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning in game two, with
Kelly Meegan (Bristol, NH/Newfound Regional ) on first base, McManus took a pitch from Brockport starter Erin Fleming and crushed a fastball far over the center field fence, a no doubt about it blast to tie the game at 2. The homer was McManus' first of 2013 after hitting seven in 2012, second most in one season in the history of RIT softball.
Brockport would get the winning run right back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Caitlyn Rana drew a two out-walk and came around to score two batters later, when Jenna Yates hit a hard single to right field that got past Meegan and went to the wall.
From there, Jaime Berger would shut the door on the Tigers over the final 1 2/3 innings to earn the win.
Alissa Dixon (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) allowed just three hits in the loss, but walked 10 batters, and struck out six.
Anna Lorette (Norridgewock, ME/Skowhegan Area) was 2-for-3 with a double in game two for RIT, who out-hit Brockport, 7-3.
Brittney LaVoie (Plattsburgh, NY/Ticonderoga) also slammed a double in the loss for RIT. Emily Dumas clubbed a third inning home run for Brockport.
In game one, Brockpory slammed 12 hits and scored all eight runs over the first four innings to cruise to the win.
Lorette drove in RIT's lone run with a single that scored
Brittany Purcell (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area), who reached on an error. RIT looked to get off to a great start in the first inning, when
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) led off with a hard double to right field and Meegan reached on an error. McManus looked to load the bases with a one hop rocket hit to right field, but it was hit so hard, she was thrown out at first.
Yates was 3-for-3 with a double, run scored, and run batted in for the Golden Eagles. Brianna Harris and Susanna Johnson had two hits apiece.
Emily Kolenda picked up her first collegiate win for Brockport, allowing just four hits and two walks, while striking out seven batters in the complete game.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday with a road doubleheader at Liberty League foe St. Lawrence, which gets underway at 1 p.m.
