ALFRED, NY - The RIT softball team (5-11) dropped its second doubleheader in a span of three days, losing a pair of non-conference games at Alfred University on Monday afternoon. RIT dropped game one, 3-1, while going down in defeat in game two, 5-2.
In game one, RIT pitcher
Sarah Collmus (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) and Alfred hurler Jessica O'Sullivan were locked in a duel, with neither team scoring over the first five innings. RIT got on the board first in the top of the sixth inning, as junior
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) launched her first home run of the season over the left center field wall to make it a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately for RIT, the lead was short lived, as Alfred responded with three unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning. Samijo Scheer singled and moved to third, as Alison Wickwire reached on a two-base error. Nicole Maher hit a deep fly ball to center field that was caught for the first out, but scored Scheer with the tying run. After a ground out, Alfred took the lead on a run-scoring single by Dana Torchia. Jasmine Picini then doubled in Torchia for the third run.
RIT had runners on second and third in the top of the seventh, but were unable to capitalize.
O'Sullivan earned the win for Alfred, allowing just six hits, while striking out five in the complete game. Collmus pitched well in defeat, allowing five hits and zero earned runs, while striking out four batters. Griffin and
Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) each had two hits for RIT.
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) and
Anna Lorette (Norridgewock, ME/Skowhegan Area) also had singles.
In game two, RIT scored first in the top of the second inning, as
Kaylee Mathews (South Dayton, NY/Pine Valley) singled in Cook, who doubled earlier in the inning. Alfred would respond with single runs in the second and third innings, and three in the fifth. RIT would get a run in the seventh, as Lorette had a run scoring groundout, plating Cook.
Mackenzie Miller was 3-for-3 for ther Saxons, finishing a home run shy of the cycle, driving in three runs. On the mound, Katelyn Jakobsen picked up the win, allowing three runs and a run, while striking out two batters in five innings. Alison Wickwire hurled the final innings in relief.
RIT starter
Alissa Dixon (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) allowed four earned runs in six innings, striking out three batters. Cook was 2-for-2, scoring both RIT runs.
