Softball slams 21 hits in doubleheader sweep over Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (12-20) recorded a sweep over visiting Nazareth College on a gorgeous sunny Saturday afternoon. RIT rallied to win game one, 5-2, then slugged their way to a 10-1 win in six innings in the nightcap. RIT recorded 21 hits in the doubleheader sweep.

In game one, RIT rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to recover from a 2-1 deficit. Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) led off with a single to center field and moved to second on a single by Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton). Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) reached safely on a bunt, loading the bases with nobody out. Brittney LaVoie (Plattsburgh, NY/Ticonderoga) slammed a double to center field, scoring both Cook and Wolcott to give RIT its first lead of the day. Anna Lorette (Norridgewock, ME/Skowhegan Area) then doubled to center, driving in McManus and LaVoie to make it 5-2 Tigers.

Nazareth took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run to left field by Maureen Rogers. RIT cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) lined a shot over the fence in right center field for her second home run of the season.

RIT pitcher Alissa Dixon (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) continued her torrid run, allowing just the first inning home run, while striking out a season-high 11 batters to earn her seventh win of the year.

Morgan Ross was 3-for-3 in the opener for Nazareth.

In game two, RIT slammed seven doubles in the blowout win, including a school record tying three from Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ). McManus, who also set the record last season, drove in a season-high four runs.

RIT scored one in the second, two each in the third and fifth innings, and five in the sixth to earn the win. Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) doubled twice, scored a pair of runs, and drove in a run. Wolcott, who finished the day 4-for-6, scored three times and drove in two, while Cook was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's.

On the mound, Sarah Collmus (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) picked up her fifth win of the year, allowing just three hits and a run over six innings of work. She walked four and struck out two.

RIT returns to action on Tuesday, with a pair of road contests at Buffalo State. First pitch will take place at 3 p.m.
