Softball suffers tough sweep at Tiger Stadium to Rensselaer

ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT softball team (8-18, 2-6 Liberty League) were swept in a Liberty League doubleheader by Rensselaer (21-8, 6-2 Liberty League) on a cold, windy afternoon at Tiger Stadium that saw snowflakes fall throughout the afternoon. RIT lost game one, 8-7 and game two by a score of 15-5 in five innings.

RPI took game one on a RBI single by Jocilyn Rudisill in the top of the seventh to claim an 8-7 victory. RIT had trailed 7-0 early, but rallied to tie the game in the sixth inning. The Engineers bats came alive in game two, slugging their way to a 15-5 win in five innings. 

For the afternoon, Gillian McCarthy went 4-for-6 with three runs scored, five RBI's and two home runs for the Engineers.

Kristina Weltzin earned the win in both games, improving to 14-4 on the season. She went 8 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs while striking out seven batters.

The Tigers were led by Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) who had five hits, scored two runs, and four RBI's.

Gme one saw RPI jump out to a 7-0 lead after two innings, but the Tigers' clawed back with a six-run third inning. Wolcott and Anna Lorette (Norridgewock, ME/Skowhegan Area) each delivered two-run doubles while Brittany Purcell (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area) and Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) added run scoring base hits.

McManus came to bat with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth and struck out, but the ball got passed the RPI catcher and Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) slid in with the tying run.

The next at bat, Rudisill came through with a two-out single, scoring Nicole Batun from third.

Alissa Dixon (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) took the loss, but didn't allow a run after the second inning. For the game, she allowed only three earned runs and struck out six batters.

The Engineers pounded out 14 hits in game two and gained control with a nine run third inning, where 11 batters reached base safely.

Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored for the Tigers.

RIT returns to action tomorrow afternoon with two games at home against Union, starting at 1 p.m.
