ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT softball team (8-16) split a non-league doubleheader against Fredonia State (6-17) on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. Fredonia took game one, 9-1, while the Tigers rebounded to win game two, 8-0 in five innings. RIT slammed 18 hits in the two games.
In game two, RIT scored four runs in the first, three in the second, and ended the game with a single run in the fifth inning. In the first,
Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) landed the big blow, a towering three-run home run to left center field, her second of the season and ninth of her career.
RIT tacked on three more runs in the second inning, as
Shealena Marnell (Locke, NY/Moravia) led off with a triple and scored on a double by
Brittney LaVoie (Plattsburgh, NY/Ticonderoga).
Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) drove in LaVoie with a hard double over own and scored on RIT's third double of inning, hit by
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton).
Wolcott almost ended the game herself in the fifth, as she crushed a pitch to left center that nearly left the yard, but hit the fence and bounced down. After a McManus single and a pop out,
Alissa Dixon (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) ended the game with single to left field, scoring Wolcott.
Cook, Wolcott, and McManus had two hits apiece. Seven different Tigers had a hit.
Dixon was tremendous in game two on the mound for the Tigers, allowing just a bunt single by Kate Nicholson in the top of the fifth inning, while striking out eight batters for her third shutout. She got into a jam with runners on first and third with one out in the fifth, but got Alyssa Morgan to line out right to third baseman
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) and coaxed a ground out by Tina Schwartzmeyer to Griffin to get out of the jam.
In game one, Fredonia scored in five different innings. Cherise Gunnell was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI's, while Anne Wasik was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI's. Morgan was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and two runs batted in.
Alyssa Brognano was strong on the mound for the Blue Devils, throwing just 84 pitches, while scattering eight hits and striking out six, while walking none. She had a shutout into the seventh inning.
Eight different Tigers had a hit in the loss.
Kelly Meegan (Bristol, NH/Newfound Regional ) drove in RIT's lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a ground out that scored LaVoie, who led off with a single.
